Would You Believe These Chrismas Stories
THE DAY SANTA WAS LEFT SPEECHLESS IN 1924 FATHER CHRISTMAS turned up in Maidstone, Kent, to distribute presents to 800 children. He stood on a stage decorated with twinkling lights, flanked by Christmas trees and fairies waving hands. The first child to go up was a five-year-old boy who was dumb. Dazed and overcome by the occasion, he laughed and shouted: "Look! Look! Father Christmas!" And from that moment he found he could speak. ST. NICHOLAS IS THE patron saint of children and travellers. But he is also the patron of pickpockets, pawnbrokers and pirates who used to haul up his picture on a flag alongside the Jolly Roger for protection. AT ONE TIME AMERICAN parents gave their children presents on both St. Nicholas Eve and Christmas Day. But towards the end of the last century they decided the idea was becoming too expensive and rolled the festivals into one.
IN 1930 THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT decided that it was rather silly, in temperatures of over 100 degrees, to have a fur-robed figure of Santa on a sleigh drawn through the streets by reindeer. So they gave him the sack and used a feathered snake called Quetzalcohuatel, ancient god of the Aztecs instead.
