JUST FOR FUN, a group of American scientists came up with a theory to explain the age-old question of how Santa manages to get round all the houses in the world in one night. The secret, they said, lies in Rudolph's nose. It glows, rather than shines, because Rudolph gets distracted if his nose is too bright. So he travels at 186,000 mps - the speed of light - to stop it shining brightly. Travelling at that speed he covers all the land on earth in 28,000 seconds, which is just under eight hours. But that still leaves him with 24 hours of darkness while the earth turns on its axis… He uses it to stop at each of the one billion homes on earth - that's 86.5 millionths of a second at each one. It explains why we don't see him, and also why he comes down the chimney - he doesn't have time to use the door.
