Would You Believe These Chrismas Stories
A LEAN CHRISTMAS HISTORIANS SAY THAT ST. NICHOLAS was a skinny, wizened-looking chap. So where did the fat, jolly Christmas card character of today come from?
Mainly from the pen of Victorian illustrator Thomas Nast who gave him a curly white beard and fur-trimmed robe. Until the middle of the last century he was usually portrayed as his long, thin self. But various l9th century artists increased his weight and gave him rosy cheeks. CHRISTMAS FAYRE
