AIDS has hit Zambia hard. It takes not only adult lives, but also their orphaned children’s futures. There are over one million orphaned children in Zambia. Many cannot afford uniforms or shoes, which are compulsory in most schools. Education is absolutely vital if they are to have a better future. Education gives hope.
Over the past ten years, Cecily’s Fund has enabled around 10,000 orphans to attend school. Each year we also fund some of the orphan school-leavers to train as school teachers. These young people then have the skills to enter employment and become economically independent.
Our peer health education programme allows orphan school leavers to raise the awareness of their peers, helping the next generation of young people stay free from HIV infection.
